Technical Modules
Below are training modules created by LaPTechS mentors and group leaders that are designed to facilitate the training of technical students while enrolled in LaPTechS. They also help prepare technical students before working off-site and/or before taking technical workshops based on the same topics. Most technical training modules are in WMV format and require Windows Media Player to stream and view.
- Backups and Disaster Prevention in Microsoft Windows 2000/XP (11.5 MB) - technical module that demonstrates 3 inexpensive methods of backing up files in Microsoft Windows 2000/XP, which include manual copy-and-paste, Microsoft Backup, and Windows Briefcase. Other topics such as mapping network shares, scheduling Microsoft Backup jobs and safely disconnecting removable media, and other backup methods such as third-party software, additional hardware and RAID, are covered as well. The duration of this module is 20:19.
- Printer Installation: Adding a Network Printer (6.71 MB) - technical module that demonstrates how to add a network printer to a Windows 2000/XP workstation using a static IP address. This module also introduces a simple method of adding network printers that use external HP JetDirect print servers. The duration of this module is 12:23.
- Printer Installation: Sharing and Adding a Printer (4.84 MB) - 2-part technical module that demonstrates how to 1) share a local printer and 2) add a shared printer over a network on a Windows 2000/XP workstation using two different methods. This module also introduces the viewer to verifying workgroup and user account settings to prevent possible problems when adding a shared printer. The duration of this module is 9:13 (part 2 begins at 5:08).
- Windows Command Prompt: Basic Commands - technical module in PDF format that allows students to practice most of the basic commands that can be used in the Windows 2000/XP command prompt. This module also contains an exercise that demonstrates how to create and run batch files.
- Windows Command Prompt: Advanced Commands (8.58 MB) - technical module that demonstrates some of the more advanced command prompt commands for troubleshooting basic workstation and network problems in Windows 2000/XP. The duration of this module is 17:04.

- How to Use a Video Camera (1.26 MB) - business module that illustrates the proper usage of a Sony DCR-TRV 80 camcorder for making home movies. This module is in PDF format and was created by Greg Caulder during the Spring 2004 semester.

- ESD Wrist Strap Instructions - technical guide that provides step-by-step instructions for properly wearing an ESD wrist strap when working with the internals of computers. Local mirror to the guide is available here.
- How to Make a Bootable Ghost Rescue CD - a great web tutorial on how to make your own bootable emergency rescue CDs similar to those Toshiba provides with their notebook computers. A PC burner and a licensed copy of Symantec Ghost are required to make the rescue CDs.
- Installing Windows XP and SP2 with 1 CD - a Tom's Hardware web guide that describes the step-by-step process of "slipstreaming" a pre-SP2 Windows XP CD with a Windows XP SP2 downloadable update.
- Making Ethernet Patch Cables - an excellent PDF presentation created by instructor Jim Johnson of Garaway Local Schools in Ohio that shows how to assemble and test a straight-through ethernet cable using the T-568B wiring standard. A local mirror to the presentation is available here.
- Radified Guide to FDISK - a complete PDF guide to creating, deleting and managing hard drive partitions using Microsoft's FDISK utility. This is a good guide for beginners who are unfamiliar with the concept of hard drive partitioning. A local mirror to the guide is available here.
- RAID Tutorial - a complete series of web guides discussing the background, advantages, and disadvantages of the different levels of RAID technologies. This tutorial is mentioned in the Backups and Disaster Recovery in Microsoft Windows 2000/XP technical training module.
- Symantec Ghost Tutorials - Symantec's collection of Macromedia Flash tutorials for using the various features of their computer imaging software, Symantec Ghost. The tutorials can be used either in demonstration or interactive mode and cover version 7 of Ghost. Symantec's collection of older tutorials that cover Ghost 6.5 can still be accessed from their website here.
- Video Streaming: A Guide for Educational Development (1.93 MB) - an extremely comprehensive and professional PDF guide that describes in detail the processes and technologies involved in creating, editing and publishing streaming video for training purposes. A local mirror to the guide is available here.
- Windows 2000 SP4 Slipstreaming - a web guide that describes the step-by-step process of "slipstreaming" a pre-SP4 Windows 2000 CD with a Windows 2000 SP4 downloadable update. The guide also contains links to other web guides for slipstreaming Windows XP, Windows 2003, Office XP and other Microsoft products.
